Best Sellers and Targets
Slave narratives such as those of William and Ellen Craft, Henry âBoxâ Brown, and Frederick Douglass became a popular genre of literature. In the mid-1800s, many slave narratives were bestsellers. Harriet Beecher Stoweâs Uncle Tomâs Cabin sold three hundred thousand copies the year it was published. This made it one of the biggest books of that time period. Stowe had worked hard to find someone to publish the book. Her publisher initially doubted it would be successful, so only five thousand copies were printed to start. Imagine everyoneâs surprise when all five thousand copies sold in two days!
